Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) is a joint venture between the government of India and the government of Himachal Pradesh, formed with the goal of executing, operating, and maintaining hydroelectric power projects in the region. In 2014, the company was entrusted with the construction of the Head Race Tunnel (HRT) for the Rampur Hydroelectric project, a 412 MW facility located in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

The HRT is an essential component of any hydroelectric power plant, serving as a conduit through which water is channeled from the source to the power-generating turbines. The construction of the HRT for the Rampur project presented a unique set of challenges, as it required drilling through rugged and inaccessible terrain at high elevations.

To overcome these challenges, SJVNL assembled a team of skilled engineers and construction workers who were equipped with the latest tools and technologies. Over the course of several years, the team worked tirelessly to complete the HRT, drilling through mountains and blasting through rock to create a tunnel that measured over 5 kilometers in length.

In addition to the HRT, SJVNL was also responsible for the construction of several other key structures for the Rampur project, including the Diversion Tunnel, the Spillway, and the Cut & Cover. These structures were designed to support the operation of the power plant, ensuring that it could function safely and efficiently.

After years of hard work and dedication, the team was able to complete all of these projects in the year 2014, paving the way for the Rampur Hydroelectric project to begin power generation. The facility has since played a vital role in meeting the electricity needs of the industrial and urban sectors of India in Himachal Pradesh, contributing to the region’s economic growth and development.
