The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is embarking on an ambitious project to construct four lanes of National Highway 5 (NH-5) in the state of Himachal Pradesh. This project, which is currently in progress, includes the construction of four lanes of NH-5 (old NH-22) from Kaithlighat to Shakral village (Package-I from 128.835 km to 146.300 km for design length-17.465 km) in Himachal Pradesh, to be undertaken in Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). The estimated completion date for this project is the end of 2025.

The significance of this project cannot be overstated, as it will connect the Shimla-Rekongpio road by various tunnels and road sections, thereby reducing travel time and easing traffic congestion in the area. The road will serve as a bypass to the outskirts of Shimla city, and will be of great benefit to the thousands of people who travel on this route every day.

Currently, survey work is ongoing for the construction site, in order to properly assess the topography and soil conditions of the area, and to determine the most efficient and cost-effective method of construction.
